Workday ATS: how to get your application through
Who uses Workday in the UK?
Workday is the dominant enterprise ATS. In the UK you'll meet it applying to major banks, retailers, consultancies, pharmaceutical firms and most FTSE-scale employers. If the careers site asks you to create an account at a myworkdayjobs.com address, you're in Workday.
What happens to your application
Workday's defining feature — and the source of most candidate frustration — is the account-and-form model. You create an account per employer, upload your CV, and Workday's parser attempts to "autofill" your work history, education and skills into its form fields. You then submit the structured form, not just the CV.
Recruiters search and filter on those structured fields. If the parser put your job title in the wrong box or mangled your dates, that wrong data is what the recruiter's search runs against — your beautifully written CV sits underneath as an attachment.
How to prepare your CV for Workday
- Always review every autofilled field. This is the single highest-value habit for Workday applications. Fix mangled titles, dates and employers before submitting — most applicants click through without looking.
- Use a single-column CV with standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills). Workday's parser handles plain layouts far better than designed ones — tables and columns are what scramble the autofill.
- Mirror the advert's keywords in your CV and in the form's skills fields — recruiters run keyword searches across the candidate pool.
- Keep dates in a consistent format (e.g. "Mar 2021 – Jan 2024") — date parsing errors are Workday's most common autofill failure.
Frequently asked questions
Does Workday automatically reject CVs?
Workday itself doesn't auto-reject on keywords by default — but recruiters filter and search on the parsed fields and screening-question answers, so a badly parsed CV or a failed knockout question takes you out of contention just as effectively.
Why does Workday ask me to re-enter my CV manually?
Its parser pre-fills the form from your CV, but accuracy depends on your formatting. A clean single-column CV parses well; designed CVs parse badly and leave you re-typing everything.
Can I use the same Workday account for different companies?
No — each employer runs its own Workday instance, so you create a separate account per company.
